Polished or rough, same result as far as pitting.

The failures of the pistons are because of an unrecognized stress. I don't think the pitting has any effect on the longevity of them. Though I have seen them eroded down significantly.

    Twins with Twins, Anyone?

I have not noticed any pattern to the water pitting on the pistons. And to be clear, I think it is water intrusion based on the pistons that I have seen. That last set of pictures shows clearly that the coating is bubbling and peeling. An adhesion issue. Chance there is a contaminate in the...

    Twins with Twins, Anyone?

I have little to no experience with the TCB coating. All Gold coat. I have never seen Gold after it left my shop and have not seen any failure personally. I'll drop a call to Swain on Monday. IIRC Dirty Hooker coated a lot with Gold. Wonder what they have seen. One issue with the cast is they...

You position sensor noise is because of how you are tapping into the signal. Called common mode voltage. There are many ways to get rid of it, but I would need to know more about your setup.

    600-650HP LBZ Build - Misc Questions - I'm a Virgin!

Concentrate on the bottom end. Crank, rods, pistons, and cam. Everything else is more or less bolt on after the fact and can be done over time as money allows. Turbo being the biggest improvement for HP, then fuel system. Nothing spoils your enjoyment of a truck more than breaking down.

    L5P L5P Tuning

You don't know me real well. Do you... Been doing it off and on for 37 years, but I get bored easily. As has been said here before, the problem is the return on effort. The hurdle is to be able to crack into the street legal market. The off-road, racer market alone will not support the...

No, Writing an application for the hardware is NOT a big deal. Really have to stop this crap that what GM, or anyone has is some sort of magic secret sauce. Making it street legal with all the EPA crap and such is a big deal. Because, as an off road only diesel application, I am hard pressed to...

There are two, actually three parts to the ECM software. Bootloader- it has several functions, but in essence is the main application that kick starts the processor and allows communications, including the serial port, for tuning. Tables- This is just a pile of data that is used to make...

    L5P L5P Tuning

Building the electronics for running the various engine systems is perhaps the biggest pain. Programming, well hell, that's not that big of a deal. Map ECU connections to processor ports Isolate JTAG ports on processor Define data input -> data output mappings Write simple sign of life program...

The key is to replace the OEM software, not just tweek tables. I've seen little effort, if any, to do that.

    Raising LMM compression

Several personal reasons for wanting lower CR. I've had the chance to compare them side by side. First, and most important to me, the lower CR engines are much quieter and smoother power. The "bump" in response at 2200 is a pain in the butt with the higher CR engine. I've tuned most of it out...

    Raising LMM compression

I seriously doubt it bumped your HP much. It will change the character of your engine's response. At 17.5 :1 , Mine runs like a raped ape above 2200. Loves to spin. Pulls hard all the way to the 4500 limiter. But, if I ever have cause to do it over again, I'll go with 16.5 : 1.

Look at the valve stem end. Bent, you ingested some debris at some time. I suspect that is what happened here.
