Intake air heater

New to this forum
i have a 2016 duramax , getting a code for intake air heater.
Can I check to see if heater is working by using a laser thermometer?
What temp should surface of heater be?

What is the code? IRC it only stays on for few seconds after starting so not sure how much it is going to raise the temperature of the outside part of the housing.

I doubt you'll see anything meaningful with an IR thermometer. The intake heater should be powered by the glow plug module. Follow the large red wire to the heater and measure the voltage when it should be on. If you have a DC clamp meter you can measure the current too. That would give a better picture. If not then disconnect the red wire and take ohm readings of the element
