Inside the zf6

I've noticed very little zf6 talk on here lately.

After a few hours of plowing snow for the first time I lost the synchro for 2nd. Not wanting to hurt anything else I yanked the transmission that night.

Found a pdf service manual online very easily and dug in.

I have none of the special tools but have a few pullers and a press. Maybe this thread will be useful for some who might be on the edge about digging into one or not.

A small update. A large jaw puller is needed. One with at least 8" of reach.

Here is a picture with the 6th and 1st/reverse removed.

My 12 ton press wasn't enough to pull the 2nd and 3rd gears but a friends 20 ton was.

I will be away snowmobiling this weekend but I will update with more pictures in a week or 2.

When I was researching it everyone said Dan at Midwest transmission. That's where I got my synchros from.

My transmission was in awesome shape so I'll be reusing most of the bearings and all gears.

I also have seen some individual gears and snap ring kits and such on ebay.

Seems like Midwest has everything. I feel if you only need a bearing or two you could get Timken ones made and save a few bucks though.

In your case with the gears once you get it apart I would search around and compare prices.

I don't think Midwest even has a 3rd gear listed, I don't know if they go by calling it low and reverse and 1-5, or just 1-6.

You guys need parts? What's the difference of the inside of a zf6 for a ford. I got one here at the yard that has 43,000 miles on it. The case cracked so we replaced it with a reman, I never sent the core back though

I'd love to know all the differences but can't find it online anywhere.

Well I got it back together and forgot to take more pictures. It wasn't too bad and I could answer a lot of questions if someone has any.

Found out half way through that ZF took the servicr manual off their website. If you call and ask they will email it to you.

Some items you will need:
large puller- at least 8" I believe
20 ton press or larger. My little 12 ton wouldn't do it.
Snapring puller
Big split plate gear puller- probably most important.

I was lucky enough to have these and borrow what I didnt.
Very straight forward with the manual.
