I guess i put this in the right place, if not my apologies. Im looking for a stock LLY transmission (5 speed) to take to George this month.

Long story short, me and a buddy were gonna pull both transmissions and take them to Big Dipper but he isnt doing it now due to him having a newborn and other stuff he hasnt even installed on his truck. I have a hectic schedule and cant afford to take 2 days off in a row to drive to maryland get it built and be back in time for work the next day. (I have 2 jobs)

Basically i wanna take it up there, get it built cause he said he can do one out of the truck in half the time he can if he pulls it and re installs it. So i can just swap them out at my garage when I have the time throughout the week.

Hope that makes sense and if anybody knows of a cheap one layin around somewhere, id appreciate it. Thanks in advance

I believe you can also use a LB7 transmission if you switch your LLY valvebody in.. Atleast that is my understanding of it..

What about the nsbu ?

Not sure but Mike, Ben, OR ?? someone in the know will be able to tell you for sure. Just trying to help broaden your search some, I was thinking about doing something similar so I am curious aswell..

I thought they were the exact same?

G solenoid/valve body is differant otherwise the same I believe. For some reason I think there was something differant in the early 5speed though? Maybe just the TCM tuning,, Not sure??

Well a guy in wisconsin has an 03 five speed for sale, and if i take it to get built, i can just swap the valve body and bell housing and sell mine?

the nsbu wont make a difference ?

Dont think you'll have to swap bell housing. 2003 should have same cooler fittings. NSBU won't make a difference.

X2.... George will help ya out.

I swapped the 05 to my 01 and don't remember changing the nsbu?

I think it was 01-02 that had diff coolant lines not 03 plus

There are a few different things internally different in early trans, but nothing that will effect the swap

Hers a brief breakdown of what I've found that changed on them. 01-early 03 used the smaller -8 cooler fittings where as mid 03+ use the -10 cooler fittings(there are adapters to run a late one in an early one but not to run a early one in a late model). The NSBU changed in 04(some early 04's still had the dual plug one), but the mounting is the same so you could easily change that. 04+ have the G solonoid valve body and harness, but only the LLY used it(LB7's have it but the TCM software doesn't enable it). Internally the C2 piston changed in 03 as well as the C1/C2 housing seals to the stator(01-02 had a .040 bleed hole in the C2 piston and but style sealing rings, 03+ does not have a bleed hole in the piston and went to overlapping sealing rings with the bleed portion cut into the sealing ring). In 03 they changed the converter relief valve spring and the lube regulator valve spring to a new style to prevent converter drainback(these are the same ones that come in a TRANSGO kit for the early models), and I believe 04 when they went to the G solonoid they changed the converter flow valve design to increase cooler flow. Mid way into 05 they also changed the input shaft and the turbine shaft torrington bearing to a design that utilizes a larger thrust bearing and this also involved changing the C1 clutch hub to one without a stepped lip inside to ride on the thrust bearing. and the pitch on the planetaries was changed at the some time on the truck units.

I'm sure theres more that I'm missing, but this is what I have found from ALLISON bulletins and manuals.

GM only sells the '05 trans which can be adapted to the early trucks with cooler fitting adapters and NSBU swap. All GM transmissions come with the G solenoid in case it is needed.
