I plan on making some work stock hooks next year with my old tow rig. Truck will have 30% nozzles modded cp3 and stock ihi with a wetzel wheel and PNP. Will I have enough power available to pull 3:42s in third? I know with my 2.6 truck when I went to 4th gear 4:56s I picked up distance. There is alot to be picked up with wheel speed just don't know if I will have enough power available in this setup to pull the higher final drive ratio.

A 4" lift also helps to change steering geography, that being said, you go 4.56s and 4th, and then if you drive it on the street just run some 35" tires and get your rpms back down. My buddy does it and worked great

I will be runing a 285 70 17 tire. I know I won't have enough power for 4th gear 4:56s. This is why I was asking about 3:42s in third. The 3:42s will be faster than the 3:73 but not ad fast as the 4th gear 4:56. I guess I'm asking if any pullers are using 3:42s and if they worked out on a truck with similar air and fuel as mine.

3:42 and 3rd will put you at about the same wheel speed as 4:88 and 4th gear. I will be running 3:42 gears next season.

Not sure what kinda of power the truck will make. I didn't think you could get enough air out of an ihi to support 4th gear.

From what I have seen, lower gear ratio is easier on parts. I ran 4.56 and 4th and truck accelerated so hard while in 4th but after switching to 2.5 late in the year wish I had a 4.88 to make up for the power loss from the 2.6 charger.

Gear set breakage not really an issue in work stock. I agree 4:88 in 4th with 33s would probably be best in a dedicated WS puller. Would not be fun to drive on the street though. Going to 1:1 in the trans helps to reduce power loss through the trans also.

I ran 3rd gear, 4:10's with 35" BFG's at about 650hp and worked pretty well. I was usually about 23mph at about 3700-4000rpm's. On a tight track I would unlock my converter at the end.

I should have mentioned it's a 2.6 truck...I'm really hoping to be more than 650. I just don't want to go with a 33 and have to buy tires later on in the season.

For a 2.6 truck 4:56 in 4th seems to be the ticket. That's what I ran in my 2.6 truck and it worked great. I was also on six 35s

Well I went with the 3:42. There is a test and tune Sunday I am trying to make it too. I guess I will know soon enough if it was a good call. I fear I will be under powered for that tall of a gear. The 30% over injectors I installed do not appear to be any more flow than stock:(
