Does anyone know the answer to this? From a mechanical standpoint, I don't understand why standoffs are used. Similarly, why are standoffs used on Cummins exhaust manifold bolts?
Pure speculation but I think it has something to do with making the bolt less likely to shear. By having a longer bolt it allows more elasticity? I may be way out on a limb though.
You may be right. The only other explanation I can think of would be that a longer bolt is able to stretch more than a shorter one.
Im still lost on timing a cummins cp3
Just poke around till it goes in the hole

I used to think it was BS until I heard it fix a very loud and annoying knock first hand.
