Does anyone know the answer to this? From a mechanical standpoint, I don't understand why standoffs are used. Similarly, why are standoffs used on Cummins exhaust manifold bolts?

Don't forget the spacers on the transmission crossmembers since 73 on all gm 4wd trucks. The newer trucks have them built into the but though.

Pure speculation but I think it has something to do with making the bolt less likely to shear. By having a longer bolt it allows more elasticity? I may be way out on a limb though.

I used to think it was BS until I heard it fix a very loud and annoying knock first hand.

Yep. We recently did a cummins with new ddp sticks, set the valves and timed the cp3. Thing is stupid quite. They say its the back lash but I dont see how when its spinning off the gear non stop.
