My Volt cost me ~$35K. Definitely not a Prius or Leaf, or any of the other offerings. Better, Much Better IMO. More comfortable than the TDI. Actually a nice car.
But, besides all the Green crap. What I like most is every watt of power I use is American made. Natural gas, coal, nuclear, it all comes from THIS country.
Still like my truck too.
You drive a $50K truck? Now where is that intelligence test.
Please let me explain, this is just one man's opinion...
I believe the context that I see the electric cars is different. I commute 45 miles each way to work on a freeway style road. Under normal conditions, the speed is +/- 65mph. I also live in a commuter community and see a fair amount of hybrids on my commute.
I have also had a Prius for over a week as a rental for work, I have driven these cars.
When I see the hybrid electric cars on the commute it strikes me....
The place for the hybrid cars is stop and go traffic where the braking can regen the batteries, and the engine does not turn on very much. The place is not, in my opinion, for sustained driving at constant speeds. Especially in colder climates (I live in Alaska) where the engine needs to run more often to make sure the interior stays warm (which is what I experienced in Denver in the winter with my rental Prius).
I guess the other thing I think of is I can buy a Chevrolet Cruz for ~$17K and get a claimed 42 mpg. This is half the price of the hybrid. For the $18k I would save on the sticker price (of the Volt you purchased, not what is available locally) I could buy a lot of fuel (and this would not include the price I pay at the meter for charging the car at home).
I guess for me, I do not see the reason to have a hybrid for the type of commuting I do, there is no net savings.
What I actually commute in is my truck. I tried commuting in my Saturn that gets about 35mpg and realized that part of the pain in my hands was coming from the car. The ergonomics of small cars do not fit my body type.
As for the natural gas, depending upon where you live at least some of the natural gas you burn comes from, or is connected to pipelines that originate in Canada. We have our Canadian friends to thank for that, and in my opinion again, it is a good thing. At least with the natural gas we are not subsidizing foreign countries that do not like the USA.
Again, just one man's opinion, I'm not trying to incite a riot. I'm truly happy that your Volt works for you.
