Who else has pinned water pumps?

Channel cut on the impeller side. Couldn’t hold the pump from the other side so just put a few shallow drill holes on the gear next to the shaft so my buddy could sink some filler/heat into the shaft and get a bit more meat for a bite.

Cool shot with a thermo imager off his truck we were playing with. Made sure we never got it “hot”. Never saw over 300* at worse. Mainly 250ish

Welding that cast sucked. Acetone, new brush, new scotch lock disc, and even some heat prior from a torch to try to burn junk out and still was a bitch. BUT we got some good weld in there finally. Doesn’t look pretty but I’m more confident in this than my pump that’s in there now lol.

another day and/or time, i certainly will. might practice on this junk one. Shit i might cut the old weld off and see if it can be rebuilt, throw it in the tool box and keep it as a road spare.

appreciate the info guys, im just going to deep groove the shaft and impeller/gear on my lathe, make a fixture to hold the gear/impeller just above a bucket of water (encompass the seal area with water so body is submerged) and have a buddy TIG it up.

plastic impellers dont sit well with me. i think the above will be better than the normal welded pumps :D

Plstic impeller is the best there is. Welded and pinned pumps are complete junk. Do not even waste your time. You cannot properly weld to a hardened shaft like the water pumps have. Not to mention you're welding cast to steel. It doesn't work and they do not last.

Bite the bullet and get a plastic impeller upgrade. We spun off 10+ welded pumps....gears and impellers. Most only made it 2-3 dyno hits and others were done after 1 pass down the track. Plastic impeller pump at 1500whp and have not had a single issue since.

Too little too late mike. if this one doesnt make it another 55-60k, ill figure it out then. im not turning over 4k consistently

It's usually not a horsepower issue. It's a shock to the system. Learned it the hard way. Just like a turbo. Destroyed a welded one and updated plastic one back to back. Not even running Thermostats.

Get a plastic LBZ style. I have had mine to 5200rpm many times this past summer and usually ran 4000+ every time the truck ran at least once. Many sled pulls, highway pulls, beating it etc. Never got hot with the pump and mishimoto low temp thermostats.

I would like to hear your take on pinning too. Why are they junk?

So what does it take to convert the LBZ pump to the LB7/LLY? Since my truck rarely turns 4000RPM, are there benefits to switching to the LBZ unit other then reliability at higher RPM?

One guy I deal with a lot has installed an electric inine pump into his lower radiator hose. He has a gutted pump in his housing and runs this pump off a thermostat. He say's it actually keeps the engine cooler than factory. He would kill any other pump in a weeks time.

That would never work out here in the summer nor when towing. The volume is not there. Very much like electric fans

When Trent was still in business he submerged the pump in water then welded the impeller to the shaft. He also pinned it. Its been in my truck for 7 or 8 years.

Actually i wanna say Trent didn't pin my pump exactly... he drilled 3 holes equally spaced out and filled them all with a TIG

When they spin is there even a way to tell if you don't overheat without taking them apart? Do they make noise leak at the weep hole or what?
