Got a semi technical question for anyone who sprays for a living

I'm painting a new hood for my 2007 gmc. The truck is graystone metallic. I bought a quart of paint from the paint supply store and sprayed. Paint did not match. Was a shade darker....

So today I go to the store. They tell me there are 6 variations of this color, BUT (and here is the part I don't agree with) the guy is telling me I will never get a paint that matches without blending my fenders.

Is this true? I understand that simply due to the fact I'm spraying such a heavy metallic I won't have a 100% perfect unnoticeable repaint without blending, but since I'm painting an entire panel, I should be able to have this close enough for most people to never notice.

I had the guy mix me up a quart of a lighter shade but he was adamant I would be blending my fenders.

Wanted to get some more opinions on this.

Do you have a carquest by you? They have a gun with a camera that they put right on the panel and take a pic of it. Then they load it into their computer and it matches it perfectley and prints out the formula for mixing. I repainted in between my rear back glass after they did this and you would never know.

I never knew there was 6 variations of graystone metallic. When i had my grill painted it didnt match either. Ill have to go to carquest. I would think it could be sprayed without blending the fenders. No different than a auto body shop fixing deer damage. I doubt they blend into the next panel to make it match

I am a painter,A blend is a must, you will not get away with a but match with any high metallic color.solid black or red maybe but not a chance with your color.Sand hood and fenders with 800-1000 grit with palm sander, tape ferneds off/base hood, remove paper from fenders dust color on tops of fender and clear.any other q's,ask away.

Every time I've ever taken a car to my body shop, the owner (buddy of mine) always tells me he has to blend the paint into the next panels, otherwise it wont look right.
Had some corrosion on the Aurora hood repaired last month, and they had to blend into the front fenders to make it match correctly.

Ok so Going along with the blending thought..

I have a perfectly painted hood which to me looked darker, and they mixed another quart of paint.

Should I respray the hood and blend the fenders, or is it possible to just blend the fenders into my hood I just painted last weekend?

Huh the carquest by me uses dupont stuff and it is always spot on. It didnt say what variation i got. I would also blend into the top of the fenders if that is a new hood.
