What's with smoke?

I have to ask... Sure, my truck smoke at WOT. It makes decent power and thus smoke to go with it. However, I don't get why people want to smoke on purpose. To leave a cloud of smoke while just part throttle, smoke while idling, etc. Sure, if I race its funny to smoke em literally, but that is part of racing. However, if I could make the same power without smoke, I'd do it. I see why Banks says they make power without smoke opacity I think is what they call it. I'm by no means a green peace buba at all, no cat, no muff, etc. So, what is it with just wanting to smoke like a freight train? Diesels get a bad rap already with smoke and pollutants. Why try to make more? Just want to know, not asking just to be an ass.

The old line of thinking from the older mechanical diesels was that if you are making lots of smoke, you are making lots of power. Now a days, the same power can be made much more efficiently so there is no smoke. Back then your adjustability choices were very limited so this could not be done very efficiently and the result was black smoke.

That line of thinking is still around today and some people still think smoke = power-even though those of us that have been tuning these electically controlled diesels know different.:D

I only smoke at WOT and under a boosted launch see avatar... But I know what you are talkin about there is a Cummins in my hometown that smokes when he drives like a granny not cool to me, I can smoke him with less smoke, but I do have a good smoke tune on hand if anyone needs to breath some soot:D

i think that once you get to a certain point smoke is just a product or if there is a limit on turbo size you gain power with fuel... i have yet to see a diesel powered superstock tractor that didn't smoke if it is competative that is or you can run nitrous:loser:

Smoke just for smokes sake. Could be like fart pipe on a Honda, they really do think it sounds cool and attracts chicks. I think they sound stupid, but they pay for that sound. Same with Hondas and Scion cars with 4 foot tall spoilers, they honestly think they look good on a bone stock Honda. I guess some people just "Like" smoke, makes them gitty. I like the sound of a turbo, get me all tingly inside. Guess bellowing smoke just makes some peoples day.

I agree that smoke doesn't = power but it does put a smile on my face when I run it at WOT and there are two streams of black, anti tree hugger, smoke following me. If I wanted a haze I would drink too much JD the night before.

EDIT: My truck doesn't even haze at WOT once the turbo lights.

IMO the first posts of the EFILive noobs say " how do i get smoke" ive seen that way too much and it gets irritating after awhile. I also agree that mine smokes at wot a little but just a little wiff with my race tune. I guess you just get to the point where enough is enough and you level off.

Thats what i like the most. I get all jealous and green everytime a vvt chevy or a 6.0 ford goes by..... I love the scream of a turbo. Much better than shootin clouds..... by a long shot.

Like many have said im still used to smoke being a result of power. Being on the agriculture side of things, turning the screw back would net you 60hp and you'd just roll smoke for no reason at all.

Our 4640 planter tractor is like that, screw is turned back a rediculous amount and it never stops smoking just what im used to personally, but i know the newer motors are trying to run cleaner...sometimes its fun and makes you feel like a lil kid again though lol.

For me i thought it was really cool at first but now ive gotten over it. dont get me wrong i still love smoke :D just dont go around pissin people off with it. I think its just cool to hear and see a diesel take off. The smoke, the noise, and everything just makes its more interesting. I didnt get a diesel to blow smoke on people but i didnt get it to be like all the gassers.JMO
