"Chip" is old school, before flash tuners were available an ecm would have to be sent out and the "chip" removed and programmed or programmed by a company in house and sent back to the customer.
Tuner and programmer are pretty much the same.....you re-tune or reprogram the ecm with either software/laptop or a handheld downloader.

Ya there is really no chip for the duramax to say. A chip is old school as far as I thought when a ECM was taken a part and a chip was installed. In today's ECM either the signals are intercepted by a plug in style controller like a Edge Edge box ,plug and play, or you have a programer that extracts the stock ECM calibration and alters it and reprograms the ECM . Like PPE Bully Dog Predator,or as complex as EFI.
