Recently, two days into our vacation my check engine light comes on. All guages and fluids check normal. We are in the middle of nowhere in Arizona but luckily we find an Auto Zone that is close. They scan the truck and get a code for #4 glow plug. So the rest of the trip I plug in the engine heater at night and all is good.

Now that we are back home, how difficult is changing this glow plug ? Do I need to remove the inner fenders and work through the wheel wells ? The part was only $12 and change.

BTW... which is the #4 cylinder on a Duramax ? 2012 Chevy 2500 Silverado 4x4

if you bought an autozone plug, take it back and buy a factory plug. they last much longer than those junk cheap ones.

cyl 4 is second cyl back from the front of the engine on the driver side. i would remove teh inner fender to change it. it will make it easier. pulling the tire will help too.

dont fret over a bad glow plug. the truck will start just fine even in cold cold weather with one bad plug.

I jus pull the intercooler tube and you'll prolly have to take the steering shaft loose. Go from the top. 30-45 min job

If it’s rusted bad there’s an air hammer attachment that works well. I second doing it with a warm engine

$12 seems really cheap. The stealership charges quite a bit more for oem. There's also a chance that more will go out in the near future if they are all original or changed at the same time.

If you don’t want to mess with it take it to the dealer and have them replace it under warranty. There is an extended service on this for the 11-12 LML’s

15114 - Special Coverage Adjustment - MIL Lamp On / Glow Plug Heater Inoperative

If not the part number for the glow plugs is 12639701

Thanks everyone for your input. My 2012 truck just hit 50k miles on this trip. Is it still covered under the extended warranty for this ?

Depends on what your time is worth. It wasn’t worth it for me to waste time going to the dealer, get a loaner, go back to the dealer, etc for a $18 part and a couple hours of time. I would have wasted a lot more than that driving around during work hours. Changed the plug myself on the weekend. It’s all relative.

TX of course
All 8 and just be done with it. My brother did 1 and then another popped up so he did that one then another popped up so he did the other 6. Just do them all.
I wouldn't the first one went out on my LBZ when it was 3 years old now it's 11 and I still have 3 origanal ones in. It did seem like 2 of them went out every year though.

Just got done yesterday changing #5 glow plug .. Jacked up the pass side ...Removed tire..Took off plastic inner fender and was looking directly at all 4 glow plugs on that side..
Easy change out of #5 and put all back together...I think the hardest part was dealing with the inner fender fasteners...Easy fix so do it yourself.!!!

The passenger side is a cakewalk. The driver side is not, unfortunately. You have the steering shaft, power steering lines, hydroboost lines, and main wiring harness all getting in your way. I still prefer coming in through the fender, but it takes much longer on the driver side than the passenger side.
