My name is Adam and I am new here.

I am planning on getting a newer vehicle in the next few years.

I drive a All Black CTS. I am a Huge Camaro fan and have been thinking of getting one, but I have been wanting a CTS-V since they came out.

We are a family of four and so the Camaro is out; I know it has a back seat but I am not THAT guy. It would be a 2nd car and I don't have that kind of cash.

So on to the CTS-V, which I still want, but I use my Wife's 2007 Trailblazer like a truck; hell it has a trailer behind it more than most Trucks that I see around here. :D The CTS is getting small too, especially with our Boxer.

I have been wanting to do a MAX swap into a Nova or something as I have also been wanting a Musclecar again.:roflmao:

I talk alot btw.

Anyways, it got me to thinking, I could get a diesel 2wd, Hot Rod it a tad, get decent gas mileage and kill like 4 birds with one pebble; be it a large pebble.

Seeing that it will be a few years before I buy, used, I thought I would search out a forum and I found 4, I think, but after spending a few hours looking at them all, I think this is the place with the best tech. I hope I am right!

I am very familiar with forums, as I am a member of about 30 other car forums, and I am a moderator on one.

I will begin searching and reading to find out what year and options that I want and need.

I know I need a four door for the family and I know I want a 2wd as I have no use for 4wd and I want to drag race it on the weekends. Plus, I have a 1985 Suburban, that has a removable top like the K5s, raised wheel-wells, deleted rocker panels, 454, (still deciding on tranny) 203/205 and Rockwells.

I have one small project and the Burban that I need to finish, but I have a garage loaded with a Quincy Compressor, Media Blaster, Soda Blaster, Hobart 187, tons of DeWalt tools and a large stainless roller full of handtools, so I am more than capable to build stuff if need be.

Any tips, tricks, suggestions, concerns, corrections or other is greatly appreciated!

Cheers!

:hello: and :welcome5:

Just an FYI a 4wd drive will be easier to race and quicker then a 2wd in the 1/4 mile.

Thanks, really? That doesn't make sense as I would assume a 2wd would weigh less and would have less weight over the front end.

I am not going to race it all the time, so alot of time would be on the freeway as a DD and was thinking about gas mileage as well.

Not saying it is not true. :D

Please school me!!!!!!

welcome. I'm from San antonio and am a fan of lone star beer.

Thanks; me too brother!

Maybe you have seen my billboard from their promotion last year....

If you plan on tuning it traction becomes an issue. Most 2wd guys end up having to switch to drag radials or slicks to even come close to matching 4wd drives 60 ft times.

IIRC Casper 1 2wd vs Casper 2 4wd the mpg difference was only 1 mpg.

I have no real use for 4wd either. But when we bought Wendy for my DD at the time, I got 4wd because I knew I was going to drag race her:woott:
No tire changes necessary. Even though I did try Casper's drag radials to see if it made much difference which it didn't.

Also out of all the vehicles I have drag raced. The fastest is Casper and the easiest to drive down the track. I only had to lift once because I launched to hard and was drifting for the first 100 ft. I had rubber plaster on all 4 wheel wells  My husband asked what the hell I did when I got back to the pits:roflmao:

Our Z06 I only run with ET Streets and skinnies and my CTS-V sucks on street tires. There was several times I had to lift because the cars got loose.

That definitely makes sense, but draggin will at the most be 10% of the time.......whatcha think....

Next question, is where do I start?

I don't see any from the beginning build threads on here.

I would go 4wd drive. But, that is me. Our local track the traction sucks.

Depends what year truck you end up buying. There are a couple of threads in here.

Here is one on LB7's

Here is one on LLY's

Just depends how fast you want to go.

Welcome to the Group.

I now have a 2wd and a 4wd.

Being in South Texas, the 4wd is no longer the DD but it is the "Go To" vehicle for boat hauling as most ramps are covered in either mud or slime. The 2wd is now my DD since it spends most of its time on the blacktop and I got it for an exceptional price that I could almost not pass on. If it were 4wd, then I would sell my first Dmax (the 04) and start on the new one.

I read the links above and still not sure what I would change first or how much I should budget to get me in the 14s.......:roflmao:

Welcome to the forum from another Texan. You are correct about this forum having the best tech info. As for the 2wd/4wd decision, there is no doubt that 4wd is the way to go. With the weight on the front of these trucks, a 2wd is all but useless in soft terrain (such as sand) or even if you're just trying to drive around on wet grass (especially if it is up hill). Not to mention the benefit when it comes to the drag strip. You will also have much better resale value if/when you decide to sell (the trend is definitely moving toward 4wd). As for the mileage, I see around 16-17 MPG in town and around 20 MPG on the highway with my 4wd CC/SB.

edit: for a list of acronyms, see this post: http://www.duramaxdiesels.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9012

Thanks guys! I am just not sold on 4wd and I doubt I can be.:roflmao: I mean it would be nice to do a front dig at the track.

I doubt it will ever see anything but pavement, but who knows; a new vehicle is a few years out, so I just want to learn specifics at this point and maybe pick up some parts along the way before I get a truck.

I wonder what the mpg difference is between two identical vehicles. I would think it would have to be a few mpgs at least, due to weight and rotating mass.

Anyways, I would prefer to lower it as I might have already stated...

Btw, here is my current ride:
