im looking to build a mild (650-700) motor for my truck. i have a lb7 motor i just picked up to build the short block for my truck. i plan on using cut lb7 pistons, decent rods, head studs, valve springs, and keying the crank and cam. what is an affordable rod choice to go with? i see most people use carrilos but i was thinking of trying the brian crower or the manley rods.

I think either one of them rods would be a good choice for that power level.

i had also thought about using the lbz rods but i wasnt sure. i may upgrade to the the danville 72mm and a 10mm stroker pump which would prolly be a little more than 700hp

im guessing that you get shot down bc thats right at the safe limit on the lbz rods if not a little above what some people think is safe. on a good tune i dont think thay would have any issues.

So how come when Ive asked before about using LBZ/LMM rods in my LLY to reach 650-700hp, people have shot it down?

Is 650-700hp that much of an unreliable hp amount on near stock internals?

Sorry to sidetrack the thread OP

Same people that say you need billet shafts in a trans to go 10's. ;)

If my truck stayed at 650rwhp I would use LBZ rods. The problem is, you want more, and more. That's why most say just go straight to carrillos.

LBZ/LMM rods are fine for 650-700rwhp. The problem is you will always want a little more HP once you have it up and running good then you will look back and say man i should've put some better rods in it. At min i would use a good set of rods in a mild build

I put lbz rods in my lly when I had it gone through. Ran it on a 650hp tune for 35k miles with over half of that towing. Then I cracked a piston. I think the lbz rods are fine for the 650 mark. Problem is most people won't be satisfied to stay there.

I guess if thats where OP wants to stay power wise, then him and I have similar goals.

Though, would LML rods be an even better choice than LBZ rods and pistons?

I know this has been beat to death, but I figured if we're discussing a budget, mild build could one reuse stock pushrods and springs? If you were only shooting for 650hp and weren't planning on revving the engine way up would stock springs and stock solid pushrods be alright?

What's the point? You'll only save a few hundred bucks.

I'd be happier with used carillos than stock rods.
