On this episode of WTF was I thinking the original plan was to just sound deaden the back of the cab turned into removing everything except the dash...

It surprisingly only took me an hour and a half to remove everything.

Once the carpet was out I vacuumed it up really good then hosed it down. While it soaked I mixed up some tide and vinegar. I kept it wet and scrubbed it with a firm bristle brush using the clean cocktail I put together. I rised it off each time after scrubbing. I ended up scrubbed it 3 times with a final good rinse making sure it was clean.

I then did what every good parent would do, hang it from my kids basketball hoop so they couldn't use it. You're welcome you ungrateful little shits!!!

Next the floor was vacuumed and wiped down with a mixture of dawn and Mr. Clean.

Plan is to use 3 sound deadening products.

1 - dynamat
2 - high density vinyl (1 LB/SF, 1/8" thick)
3 - closed cell foam (4mm thick)

I'm hoping this helps with my droning that's driving me crazy.

I have a resonator right off my down pipe that helped and want to try this before I get a 30" aeroturbine muffler/resonator installed after the torsion bar mount.

Looks like it's coming along nicely.

FYI, Tide is a base while vinegar is an acid. So they will cancel out. The tide is probably stronger so in essence you'll just make weaker tide. Better to use each one separately with rinsing between. Probably tide first since it will be harder to rinse

That's a great point, I had forgotten that for some reason. For being 20 years old how much I scrubbed it it turned out pretty good.

I'll vacuum it tomorrow and see how it looks. If I don't like it I can wash it again.

We used "Totally Awesome" on the carpet and other cloth components in my 2000 before I sold it. Interior was light Grey

Sprayed it on heavy, gave it a good scrubbing in the drive way especially in the stained area's, and then pressure washed it.

It looked like a brand new carpet. The Guy that bought it from me asked If I had just replaced it... :ROFLMAO: He Couldn't believe it was the original carpet.

I'm curious how it will work out to get rid of the drone. From my research it's hard to get rid of it and tire noise with sound deadening. I would do as much as you can to the back wall and still get the interior panels to fit. I did sound deadening on my my and posted about it. I definitely helped then I went and add a camper shell and I think it's worse now. I really just need to get away from mud tires.

I used sound skins I can’t remember the exact spelling but it’s like dynamat but it has a foam like layer on the top. Started with the doors and it made a huge difference, then did the back wall. I noticed a huge reduction in tire noise and it made the speakers sound better.

Episode #109...

I put down dynamate on all the flat surfaces but left the curved surfaces just steel.
I concentrated on the back of the cab and passenger side being that the exhaust is there.

Once all the dynamate was down I put down all the closed cell foam, again making sure the back wall was covered really well. The sheets I used were about 12" x 18" as well as peel & stick which made install slick, just time consuming contouring and cutting out interferences.

Finally the 1/8" vinyl...
This took what seemed like forever because it's heavy and there's no forgiveness...
Once I figured out how it behaved/how big of a dick it was... I saw the best way to cut/over lap it for working around floor ductwork, tunnel, mats, back of the cab, etc.
I again made sure the back of the cab was tight/fitup really well. Being the vinyl wasn't stick&peel I used some 3M 90 spray glue to adhere it to the closed cell foam that was there. I also didn't worry about having it form to the back of the cabs bends, I just glued as big of a sheet as I could.

Now that the vinyl was complete I could start putting the floor back in. I was concerned that all those extra layers were going to make carpet install a bitch and it would look stupid in that it wouldn't fit properly, thankfully though it looked just fine.
Being I ended with gluing the vinyl on the back of the cab I put that piece of carpet in first followed by the top plastic molding

Once the back of the cab carpet was on I threw the floor carpet in. It took some time to push/pull it into position. After that it was time for the seats and molding.

Have you applied any of that stuff behind the door's, like on the back side of the door skins ?

I've put a number of miles on the pickup with all the sound deading complete and interior back together.

First impressions
It's quieter and more pleasant to drive.
Listening to the radio is alot better as well, I don't have to turn it up as high.
Another huge positive is I can talk with my kids in the back so much better or have a conversation with someone in the passenger seat.

On with the drone...
The first drive I felt the drone was less than pre spins deadening.
Fast forward a month and I don't really notice the sound deadening doing much in terms of less droning.

In terms of the radio and conversation I'm glad I did it, so much nicer.

On to the big question
Knowing what I know now, would I do it again?

That's a tough question. It's more pleasant to drive but it was a lot of work and $400 - $500 for all the material.

Episode #328 of WTF was I thinking...

In my effort to remove the LB7 drone I installed an aero turbine 5050XL muffler/resonator.

Being I already had a resonator installed under the passenger side I installed this muffler back where the straight section is in front of the rear axle.

I've had it on for 2 weeks now and didn't notice any reduction in drone.

Guess the only thing left to do is get a 2015 or newer Duramax...

What size is your exhaust?

What I've read says any resonators to address drone need to be as close to the engine as possible, so it might do better if it was farther forward.

5" maganaflow
I already have an FTE resonator right off the firewall on the passenger side. It made a huge difference when I put it on a few years ago.

Donaldson M101181 will definitely make a big difference in drone if you have room for it.
