Big Turbo Guy's........Got any photos of your waste gate set-up.

I'm setting up a 16 lb gate with a regulator to add 35 lbs on the back side.

Anyone playing with this set-up?

The 16lb gate will open at 16 lbs.

If you apply a regulated pressure to the back side of the gate, it would keep the gate from opening until it overcomes the pressure of the spring, plus the pressure being presented to the back side of the gate.

i.e. 16 lb spring

60 lb of boost

60 lb pushing the gate open

16 lb spring + 35 psi regulated being applied = 51 lb before the gate opens.

A bigger spring would do the same thing. I haven't found a gate with a bigger spring.

Also you can stack springs in the gate, but thats a science project.

What do you need to see, how it's plumbed into the exhaust or how you tie it into boost? My twin setup has an external waste gate setup similar to what you're talking about.

I'm thinking about letting it gate under the truck. I don't want to have a flange to line up on the down pipe. I have enough stuff to line up on a tear down now.

Here's the plan..

I want 55 psi on the manifold.

I would run a line from the high side of the turbo to the top of the gate.

I would run a regulated line from the high side to the bottom of the gate.

I could control when the gate opens by adjusting the regulator.

Here's a picture of how my waste gate is hooked up.

Very nice....

I figure that I have made a few runs down the track and a few sled pulls without a gate. Now I can play with a regulator and control the boost so I can use the Nitrous at some point after I can rely on the gate to dump some exhaust off the charger and use all the crap I'm spraying to cool things off a bit.

Next question: Is anyone using a regulator to control the waste gate?

Nice set-up Josh. Everything is so shiney and clean!! Whose set-up is that?

What kind of regulator are you thinking of using Steve?? Just a regular shop air regulator or something High Volume? I am ASSuming you would just use it as a pilot control so to speak correct??

Yes, A simple Regulator that is used on a HVLP gun, or whatever. Some people are running a Reg on their gate and that is what they are using.
If there is something that's working better, I'm interested.

This set-up allow's you to turn the boost up with a Knob. I'm not too sure how sensitive it would be to adjustment, i.e. between pulls or passes.

Look's like I've found another science project.
Damn, last time it was very costly:eek:.

I hate science projects..............

That's the MPI twins kit. There are a few more pics in the tuning forum if you want to see them.

Maybe you could buy one of the Ricer style boost controllers. I don't know anything about them but I'm sure somebody here does.

Maybe turbo-max would have an idea about what I'm talking about. Aren't they like an electrically controlled waste gate. Then you can dial up or down the boost as you see fit.

Maybe I'm watching to much Fast and Furious.

correct, there is several electronic type of boost controllers out there that are very nice and effective....

Maybe, I need to control my use of the word maybe. :dunce:

Thanks T-max.

Ditch the mechanical boost reference gate and go with a electronic one. Boost goes to a map sensor which goes to a boost controler in the cab, that you set and that sends a signal to the gate. Mechanical gates start to open befor peak boost just since that is how a spring works. If you put a stiffer spring in it it will open at the right time but it needs more boost to get it open enough to limit boost, so you will over boost. With the electronic it can go from closed to all the way open on demand, it wont start opening at 45 and then be open enough at 55 to controle the boost. When I made the swap on my car there was a huge diff in high boost spooling ;) Inovative turbo makes some nice stuff :D
