So I'm looking at taking the Mrs and myself up to Alberta and visiting over the summer. Just wondering if anyone can give us some good ideas for tourist type stuff to see/do. I've been to Canada a fair number of times but it was always driving through (I'm from Alaska) never got to stay for long. I plan on flying into Calgary and visiting Edmonton for sure. Just curious if there's anything that you'd recommend seeing/doing as it's her first time to Canada. And does anyone know if we'd need to get our passports first? Thanks guys!

Lots...Calgary Stampede (Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth), Head Smashed in Buffalo Jump, Banff, Lake Louise, Nordegg, Kananaskis, Drumheller, West Edmonton Mall, Icefields, Alberta Prairie Steam Train, Calgary Heritage Park, Bass Pro Shop in Rocky View, etc. Maybe someone actually from Alberta can give some more appropriate info. What type of things do you want to do? Camping or Hotels?

Wanting to do the tourist thing since I'm with the lady and camping isn't her gig. Want to see the West Edmonton Mall I believe it is (the biggest one in North America) and just want to show her Canada cause granted I don't live there I think it's awesome. Plus we're real big into hockey and will probably try and catch a Junior A game or two and she's dying to see the Northern Lights (man I miss those)...just depends on when we decide to go.

Not sure who will be playing hockey in the summer, but pretty much everything sledhead posted is what there is to see. Definetly hit up the stampede in Calgary if you are coming up during that time. And get yourself a theme room at West Ed. Mall. Good Times!!

You also need to spend a couple nights in Banff and go on the Gondola ride in the mountains-wicked picture taking stuff to see!

Moraine Lake I miss that place so bad. Water is so blue and good place to go.

Royal Tyrrell Museum that is in Drumheller a good stop on the way from Calgary to Edmonton but a bit out of the way.

If your into sight seeing I would do the park. Lots of wildlife to see, the icefeilds which have big ass buses that drive up onto the glacier. You hit Baniff, Jasper all that stuff along the way. You could do stuff in Calgary then start out from there and loop upto Edmonton on the way back, just follow the yellow head hwy.

The drive in on highway 93 from Jasper to Banff is a picture rich drive!! It is about 140 miles of winding and twisting highway through the mountains!! Moraine Lake is amazing!! The Bow valley glacier and columbia ice fields along 93 are awesome!!

And does anyone know if we'd need to get our passports first?

Yes you do. Sometimes I have to go to Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada (TMMC) in Cambridge, Ontario. One of the last times I was there, one of my colleagues passport had expired. He didn't have time to get it renewed before we left so he took his original birth certificate with him (and the passport). Somehow he got in but when we started to leave, the person at the airport told us they weren't sure how customs let him in the country without a valid passport. He said we could no longer use our birth certificates. Luckily it was a small airport so they let him go back home.

Any dates set of when you plan to go?
After thinking about it, if I were you, after the Calgary stuff head west to Banff, spend a couple days or so around there seeing the sights. Then continue west to Lake Louise and take Highway 93 north-that is a drive you will never forget!! Watch out for the wild Bighorn sheep and Mountain Goats!!

Then stay in Jasper for a little more sight seeing and when your full on that, head to Edmonton to the mall. You may get lucky and catch a hockey scrimage or practice by the Oilers in the open rink in the mall! You can do some bungee jumping, ride the rollercoaster and stuff, play in the wave pool and ride the waterslides. Lots of fun there!!

Then come to Red Deer and Simon or myself will get you loaded and feed you for the night! Then on to Drumheller to look at Dinosaur bones and then back to Calgary. Kind of do a loop. There is more stuff to see depending on what kind of time you have but that's a rough reccomendation from myself on a way to see stuff in Alberta.

What he said here will be a pretty good trip...depending when you are coming, the Calgary stampede is always a good time, between the actual rodeo events and the events at the bars.

My Canadian brethren looks like I'll be headed your way soon if everything goes well with getting my passport. Trying to decide between taking the I-5N and the I-15N route. Think I'll take one up to Alaska and the other back. Just wanted some places to stop in BC on the way up and through Alberta on the way back. I know the route back on the 15 will take me through Edmonton :D but other than that looking for stuff to see
