gonna pull my motor this week to look at it, any upgrades I should do to it? 2006 duramax crew cab. have arp studs already in do I need anything special to reuse them? should I pull the tranny before motor or just pull the motor and leave tranny in the truck?

Have heard I should do the water pump while its out any suggestions on this?
Thanks.

Depends.... What is the purpose of pulling the motor? And what do you want to do with it?

I can look at mine by simply opening the hood.

The trick to re-using ARP head studs is to not strip them taking them out. I always manage to strip 1 or 2 taking them out. Allen (hex key) stuff and I don't get along at all. Perhaps I use too much locktite on the studs, but ever since I had one back out of the block, I am generous with the stuff.

Though if the motor is out of the truck, you shouldn't need to pull the studs out, just take the nuts off and pull the heads up over the studs.

If you have around ~200k or more miles on the truck, it would be prudent to replace the water pump. My stock one lasted 300k before I replaced it when I built the motor, but I just helped a friend replace theirs tonight with "only" 250k on the clock.

If the heads are off, you are at the point where installing basically any top-end upgrade is super easy. That would be a great time to upgrade your turbo, CP3, Y-bridge, injectors, up-pipes, or anything else you can think of on the top end. Should you? That's the question.

I'm with Arek: why is the motor coming out and the heads coming off? Think you cracked a piston? Basically, if we know why things are coming apart, we can better suggest what can/should be replaced in the process.

And if you're planning to just pop it open and look at it, be warned, basically none of the gaskets are reusable on the Duramax, so it will cost you around $500 just to pop the heads off and on again. I'm all for doing things for the experience, just know what you are getting into.

think a headgasket was put on the wrong way and caused a bent pushrod in 1000 or so miles

Take a picture of the back of each head. There's a tab (headgasket) sticking out. That will show if it's on right or not.

Alternate firing cam. Key cam & crank. Pin water pump and oil pump. Bolt the motor mounts. Balance rotating assembly. That's all I can think of right now...

You can key the crank with it in the block, but it is kind of a ghetto way to do it, and I don't recommend it. I'd just get a SoCal/ATI SuperDamper, and cross your fingers on the crank gear. If you are sticking with the stock cam and valve springs, I wouldn't loose much sleep over it.

From what I have heard, going to an alternate firing cam doesn't seem to prevent breaking an existing crank, it only helps when paired with a brand new crank. That's why I ended up sticking with a standard firing order cam for my build.

Pinning the water pump is a good idea, especially while the motor is torn down. Cheap, and you're right there. If there is any question as to the condition of the water pump, just replace it with a new pinned one, IMO.
