The whole crown of the piston.

Delta T is a factor. How much the piston material absorbs is another as is how much area is exposed at a given time.

And on this whole subject against popular belief I personal found that not squeezing the quench area seemed to make it more manageable also as my first motor was 15.25:1 comp but I put the pistons are zero deck height with grade C gaskets. This allowed me to run more timing without causing any of the normal issues associated with higher timing levels and I was extremely happy with that motors response. There is a LOT to the complete combo but this is just a nice example of what I did back in the day with mine. I really do miss that motor cause it was one of my favorites of all time!

Some very good info here glad I happened across the thread.
The fact that so much heat is sucked out of the cylinder into the cooling system sounds like a thermal coating capable of reflecting that eat back into the combustion would be hugely beneficial?

Just got off the phone with John my new motor will be getting a set of oval bowls.
Glad I called now I need to call SoCal and confirm but John thinks I need to go .020 over for the big valves in the stg2 heads. On three good side he said .020 will not hurt the induction hardening.

Update since I have been kinda quiet lol. This is the fastest set of these pistons to date(that I am aware of and this is the second set that I have had in the 8's) and this motor is actually in a customer's rail car now so it should go even faster with these cast Oval bowls in it. These are a 17.5:1 Compression setup. If the converter would have stayed locked it would have been much faster for me.

I remember when You first posted this video, i was at Mike L's shop and we watched it and thats the first thing we noticed was the convertor unlock. She had alot left in that pass but it was still a great one.
