I was thinking of rebuilding my turbo due to some issues with codes i have been getting. p2963 and p0046 all the threads i have read said that the turbo veins are sticking, some people had to replace the turbo some just cleaned the solenoid and it corrected the problem. The truck is running ok, I cant say I am noticing a difference in power because right before this happened i pulled my programmer off. If I am going to pull off the turbo i figured i would just clean it and rebuild it. My question is would i have to balance the compressor turbine assembly if i did rebuild it? Also I have read some stuff about the computer having to relearn, can that be done by removing the battery cables, do i have to have a programmer, or is this another case of the internet being oh so truthful?

Btw here is a funny video that I came across searching for turbo rebuilds, reminds me of The Trailer Park Boys.

That guy in the video is a gem!!:D

If you turbine and compressor wheels look good then you'll be able to reuse them. Also, if you don't want to balance it you'll need to take a sharpie marker and put a vertical line on the turbine and compressor wheel. That way you'll have the turbine and compressor wheel lined up just like when it was assembled.

If it were me, I would send it off and have it balanced; it's cheap assurance of future problems. I've also noticed most turbine wheels have to be ground on because they're not balanced as well from the factory.

For the relearn I'm not 100% sure but I believe you need a tech 2 to do a full relearn.

If you want a rebuild kit, parts, or run into any issues when taking it apart PM me and I'll do my best to help over the internet, haha.

ok so i pulled off the mouth piece of the turbo and played with the end of the turbine bolt, it had some play up, down, left and right. my question is should their be any play in the shaft and if so how much? I don't know much about turbos in case you cant tell.

there will be a hint of side to side/up and down. if there is any in and out play, that should raise concern.

No in and out play just some up and down side to side. All the codes im getting are for stuck veins in the turbo i just want to make sure if I pull the turbo off I have every thing i need to fix it so my truck isn't down for a while.
