Turbo Gurus I need help.

I got a center cartridge rebuild kit sent to me and the journal bearings are different. The ones in my turbo have a groove on the outside edge where the oiling holes are and the ones sent in the kit do not have this groove. I am wondering if this is an upgraded bearing and if it will work.

Here is a pic from my cell phone. Old bearing top and new bottom if its not obvious.

Is there a groove in the housing were the bearing rides? I'm guessing probably not. The groove in your old bearing is to provide oil flow and supply all the way around the shaft. The new bearing (if you lined the oil supply hole up) would only give lube to one side. At the rpms a turbo spins it wouldn't last long just my opinion. Anybody else.

The inset shoulder seems to be deeper on the new one when compared to the old one as well.

Look inside the housing and see if there is a groove it cut in that lines up with the oil feed port. If so, then the oil would travel around the bushing and into all those holes. If not, then it is the wrong kit or was machined wrong.

Talked to Brayden today and he says the new bearings are fine that is how all the rebuild kits are now no matter if there is an oil groove or not.

He said he has rebuilt many turbos that had the bearing I had in mine and put the new kind in and they work just fine.

Is there a groove in the housing then for the oil to migrate around the bushing to the oil holes?

Do you have to line up one of the oil holes with the oil supply hole? What happens if you miss the hole? Sounds hokey to me.

If it was me, I would got to a machine shop and get a slight groove cut into it like the old one - just for my own piece of mind, but that's me.

There won't be a groove cut all the way around the bore of the cart no matter what turbo you have. It will be a small half moon groove at the top where the oil feeds in. The kit that Andy has is a standard S300 bearing kit. The only critical dimension on that bearing besides the ID & OD is the hole location which is at the same dimension on both regardless of the groove.

I C. As long as there is some sort of groove-it should work fine. Thanks for the info. I may need it for future reference!!:D
