Turbo brake, turbo life?

I was reading that some tuners offer a turbine brake included in their tow tunes.
They are using the variable turbo vanes to work as a brake help.
How does this affect the turbo life?
What are you thoughts about it?

Mine has had a turbo brake for 50k and no issues. I can make 10#'s of boost decelerating. It really helps. When I had a cheetah, it worked even better and sounded good

the factory is doing it, so must not be too hard on them

Available on LML and has been on the cummins 6.7 since day one.

Youre just closing the variable vanes in the exhause housing during 0% throttle

Is it possible to program the turbo brake, only being activated in tow/haul mode?

Correct. Converter has to lock to be effective. Brake is almost unnoticeable when not in tow/haul.

Back when I had a stock turbo I commanded 99% vane angle and made around 15psi with 0% throttle. Hold it in 4th gear at 3k rpm and let off the throttle, you will notice it

Love my turbo brake, I see no detrimental effects coming out of using it...

Only difference I saw was a overall drop in fuel mpg with it

Its the only reason to keep the var vane on a truck, if you tow heavy
