Question: Triple Turbo Reccomendations

I've talked to a few very knowledgeable members on this page and I want to poll the rest. I'm looking at going to a triple setup for next season or maybe late this season depending on how long fab takes as I've been made an offer that is hard to refuse from a good friend of mine. I'm going to keep it all borg based with two S300s over an S400. At the moment I'm leaning towards 2x S369SXE/73/0.91 over a S472SXE/87/0.90.


Besides Ne-Max, does anyone else have experience with this type of setup? My goal is to make ~1200-1400hp and have it drive well. My S480 makes that power but does not have the street manners I am after. I'd like to run a Goerend J or K converter with them. The J made my 75/87/1.00 an absolute riot to drive and I believe it will lend itself well to the triple setup.

Mike Graves was north of all those numbers with 69's and a 472. Not sure how they drive on the street. Mine is Marks 72 with two 69's. I love how it drives, I tow a boat, wife drives it whatever, I get that instant spool isn't for everyone though :roflmao:

im running that same setup right now.... just getting it dialed in.

Would there be much of a difference going from .91 to .88? I thought for every tenth would make 100rpm difference on spool.

The 88s bring the 69s on sooner. The 72 mainly determines spool up witch a 91 works nice. Since hes not gonna drive them that hard the tight housings work nice. With the right fueling and housings this set up has made over 1700hp.

I know some guys have great luck with VGTs. If the truck was a "one build for everything" setup then I would likely go to a 72R/2x 369sxe but the reliability and user serviceability of the S400 outweighs the benefits of the VGT, especially with a good converter (Goerend J). The most usage the truck will see is simply driving to the track or to work, I don't plan on hooking a trailer to it etc unless its a pulling sled lol.

That was my thoughts exactly after we talked. I don't think the 0.88 vs 0.91 difference will be huge either way BUT since they're the same price and open housing (like the flanges will be) then why not. My goal is 1200-1400 on fuel and it run clean. I want to get some seat time this season (may delay when the truck starts making passes but so be it) as I want to do the UCC qualifier 2021 or King of the Streets 2021 (possibly both?).

Why not run a G42 and a G55? Or a 68 and an 88? Should spool a lot faster than your single and be a little less plumbing than triples...?

I ended up going with 2x S369/73/0.88 over a S472/87/0.90 for now. If drive pressure makes me change I may add a gate or change housing sizes but only one way to find out!

Green is my boost. Blue is my drive pressure.
This is tune 2 witch is around 1100 pulse with 400 over injectors. In tune 3 boost and drive matched perfectly. I'm sure in tune 4 is where I'll start seeing drive pressure rise like crazy.
Many guys have zero idea on how this works. They think tight housings are the devil.

What would you say your tune 3 is in terms of hp to the ground? It would make sense that drive spikes on the shift. If I keep RPM reasonable then I don’t think I’ll see a problem.


I do agree, I’d like to run as tight of a housing as drive pressure will let me.

I am playing around with this theory at the moment with the S369 in my compound set up. In reality if your system works/preforms as needed and your not eating up the turbine side of your thrust bearing, then higher Drive Pressure isn't a issue. Going to a bigger housing might drop drive pressure, but you also can lose efficiency of the turbine wheel. Granted you have to have a turbine wheel that support the CFM flow.

In compound setups you use gates to dial boost in between the stages. I always run gates and a blowoff. I’ve ran a 371 with 2 366, a 472 with 2 366 and I now have a 476 ball bearing with 2 468 chargers. I have ran the last setup yet but will testing a on theories of wheel leverage. I also have a 366/480 setup that makes 1200 at 60 psi of boost. Very low boost for the power in a setup like that.
