I'm a long time RV'er and have had them all, campers, pull trailers, 5th wheels, motorhomes both class A, B and C.
You have a good truck for a camper, (duramax's are not). But they are expensive as hell for what you get and are really tied down unless you unload and that is a bit of a pain.
5th Wheels are easy towers, cut corners much worse than a pull trailer and IMO better for longer stays such as wintering out somewhere etc.
I prefer pull travel trailers, good used ones. Can get a really nice one for 10K or a bit under. Are easier to back than a 5th wheel (until you get use to backing one) follow well and don't cut much off when you turn a corner. If you look around you'll find that they don't get much cheaper than 5 or 6K no matter the age. You can get a 25-27' one that will be easy to tow, can park in most any state or Forest Service camp ground, easy to set up. Slide outs are a must. Makes a ton of difference. Take a good look the running gear, (wheels and axles) and how the cabinets are made, some are so damn cheap that they will fall apart on any kind of rougher road. Especially look at how easy it is to work on, where is the water pump, are the dump valves easy to get to, how much fresh water does it hold, how much black and gray water.
I don't know your family situation, but I saw one when I was working down in San Diego that was made by Coleman that was cool as hell. Had a separate front bedroom and in the back was a bunk room with three great bunk beds. Out side on the same wall as where the bunk room is was a fold down wall with another complete kitchen including sink, another refrigerator and counter top. Very handy if you had a family with kids.
Good luck
