Transfer Case Help Needed

I was under my 07 Duramax the other day just looking and grabbed ahold of the front driveshaft for my 4x4 and noticed alot of play in it. I could hear it clunking inside the case when I moved it up & down like something is worn out or broken. There is no leaks and I have only used the 4x4 once to pull my boat out of the water and did'nt notice anything wrong but there definately is something wrong inside. Can someone tell me what I need to look for? Is it a bearing, bushing, or both? I need to get it fixed before winter. this a DIY job or should I take it to a shop?

Thanks

It's not hard to pull yourself. Drop the driveshafts, unhook the electrical stuff, unbolt from the trans, and I think I dropped the crossmember but not sure if u really have to do that. I will b pulling mine again tomorrow. I made a short box wrench for the top 2 bolts where it meets the trans. Also sounds like a bearing issue u have.

There is a bearing and a bushing in the transfer case. Drain the fluid. If you only get a cup or so, take a mirror and look on top of the case at the drive shaft end. Also do a search for pump rub.

To pull the case, get a set of stubby gear wrenches. That is how I took mine out of the truck. Pull driveshaft with pan under it to catch any oil that may be lingering. Disconnect all electrical connection. Move pan to the back of the trans, then pull the 6 or 8 bolts that hold it to the transmission.

When taking the case apart, pull the speed sensor (has been mentioned that it could hang up), pull the rubber plug on the top of the case, pull all of the bolts, and spread the snap ring. Hold the snap ring open while prying the case halves apart at the provided tabs.

I would not Chase after a problem, if you are grabbing on the front driveshaft that's a lot of extra leverage you have to grab ahold of. If it does not make noise or have problems with it don't go making extra work for yourself, our transfer cases are pretty tough pieces

I need to fix it before something grenades. There is a clunking noise inside the case just by moving the front driveshaft yoke up & down by hand. I can move it up & down about 1/4".

X2 dont pull it until you know you have a problem. I'm changing my oil tommorow, If you can give me a little time I'll grab mine and see what kind of play I have.

To make you feel better I just walked out to my shop and grabbed my front driveshaft, there was a clunk noise and some play, there is a u joint there that will have play and that is a splined joint there will be some play. Don't want to go back in forth, just trying to save you from chasing a problem you don't have! Make sure fluid is full and all should be good

I have not seen one that dis not so what you described. Even after a rebuild it is that way.
