Transfer case filled with synthetic oil update

About two years ago I filled my transfer case with synthetic 5w-30 motor oil per Mike L's advice when i built my trans. I changed the fluid today to see how much/if any had evaporated as most people say it won't last much longer than ATF. Well it does. In two years with 45k miles of occasional racing, and lots of fishing and hunting I only lost maybe 2 oz of motor oil and have zero pump rub issues at 105k. Long story short, use motor oil in your tcase!

Nice to know - I did that route with my fluids at 30k; I've been wondering if i should switch it for some transynd, maybe I'll just leave it ;)

ATF evaporates rather easily in the tcase. Mine had ATF before I built my trans and I only had about 12k on te ATF and it was damn near a half quart low then Mike told me to try motor oil. Definately some great advice as i use my 4wd alot and it's one less thing I have to worry about

I use Syn. 5w-30 Mobil 1 in mine as well. Other then getting a slight drip every once and a while, from the oil being super slippery, it has been good to me. I've been using Rotella-T Syn. in the motor since 10K mi. as well!

I realize that, but the way paint said it, it sounded like he was saying TranSynd was bad for the transfer case.

I just would have assumed everyone has read or atleast been told that studies have shown that 5w-30 was overall far more superior than running ATF... i have ran 5w-30 for 2 years and don't see any signs of pump rub. When Mike switches TC's for me which will be pretty soon we'll see how much fluid i have lost to vaporization

I put transynd in the transfer case. As far as lubrication goes, it would be fine. It likely doesn't have the same high pressure properties as oil or gear oil does though, thats the only reason I was leery about using it in the TC.

But I was thinking at the time that in our chain driven TC's, there really isn't a need for anything with a high pressure additive. More so on the gear drive TC's.

But I will probably take Mike L's advice and throw some 5W30 in there next time around.

Ok, I just misunderstood what you posted. I run 3 qts of 5w-30 Mobil 1 in my transfer case too.

FWIW I believe it was also from Mike that I learned that Mobil 1 synthetic is not truely a fully synthetic oil - something to do with a lawsuit they won that allowed them to market it as full synthetic as long as it was above a certain percentage. BTW I switched to AmsOil synthetic 5W30 when I built my trans.

In any event, the Mobil1 stuff has kicked ass and I know Russ and I both use our 4wd quite often come duck and chukar time :D

HaHa What studies? Show me one? The fact is poor maintenance is generally the problem. There are only a hand of truck if that running around with 5-30 in there TC compared to ones with ATF. The ones with ATF ain't dropping like flys. If you think 5-30 is going you save you from pump rub your going to have another though coming. I'm not saying don't run 5-30, but to say that its superior is....
