2002 4x4 216k miles
A little background info, I purchased this truck from a guy at work 3 weeks ago. He owned it for 215k miles before he sold it to me. Never had any issues, kept up with regular maintenance, never tuned, in fact it still has the factory intake and exhaust. 100% stock truck. A little smokey so I'm sure it is getting to the point of needing injectors. I noticed a few days ago that the front left hub bearing was making a little noise. Haven't replaced it yet.
Fast forward to yesterday morning on my way home from work. 10 miles into my trip home, merging into the highway I notice somewhat of a harsh shift from 3rd to 4th. Rain has been coming down in buckets here in Cincinnati and thought maybe I spun the tires then they caught. Seems to drive fine after that. Getting off the highway I feel another hard shift while slowing down. I get to the stop light and notice my CEL came on. Go to pull away from the light and sure enough, 3rd gear is all it has. Pulled over in a parking lot to check the codes with a PPE programmer that I had with me. (Planned on putting a small tune on there to pull my mowing trailer. I have a mild built regular cab, no need or desire to hot rod this one.) Anyway PPE showes 0722, 484D, 5258, 5E64, 6A70, 767C, 8288, 8E94, 9AA0, A6AC and many others. I had enough after that. Cleared the codes and continued home. Max speed of 40 mph. Got close to home, 5 miles after clearing the code. Upon slowing down for a stop sign, odd shift and CEL. Sure enough, 3rd gear only. When I get home I connected my hand held MAC Tools scanner. It read 4 codes- P0700, P0840, P0746, P0700 again, in that order. I also noticed that the speedometer would bounce between 20mph and 60mph while sitting still, transmission in neutral. Cleared codes, speedo would now float between 0 and 5 mph while sitting still. I quickly checked the harness by the FICM, didn't notice any bare wires or anything else odd. Also, checked trans fluid. A darker shade of pink, but still feels good and smells "good". At the proper level, too.
I am hoping that the incredible amount of rain we have gotten in the past 48 hours has something to do with this and it isn't anything major. Could a malfunctioning speed sensor be my culprit? Maybe the front hub that I have ignored so far? I plan to get under it and look at the wiring underneath when I get home this morning. I didn't want to lay in a puddle in my driveway to look yesterday. I left that truck at home and drove the hot rod into work tonight.
I am hoping someone (Mike L) could point me in a good direction. I have read a lot of threads he has replied to and am pretty sure he has a crystal ball at his disposal or something.
