Hey guys I was wondering if there was a way to flush my tranny lines and cooler. I dropped my pan and found plenty of shavings. I am pulling the trans apart to put in a SC stage-4. I will be able to clean all that out thuroughly when it is apart. I am wondering about cleaning the lines and cooler. Can I hook up a garden hose and flush it out. I was thinking of flushing it out with water then put in a cleaning slovent(thinking mineral spirits) flush with water again then blow it out with my air compressor. It will have a chance to sit for a couple of days before I reassemble everything. Any ideas you have would be great. Thanks

Oh, please please PLEASE wait for someone more knowledge-able than me to chime in before you turn the hose to your truck!!

I was going to suggest buying some cheaper 'regular' fluid and a few alli filters.
Follow this site: http://mdt.volvospeed.com/repairs/allison_atf_filter.html

That should help flush it, just keep the fluid level UP to make sure you don't run it dry.

I think before you follow even my opinion you should get someone with more tranny experience to jump in on this, if you have solids and that many in there you've got some issues IMO.

I was looking for a way to flush the rest of the system with the trans out. I am positive that there has to be shavings throughout the system and wanted to flush it before the new trans went in. Don't want to chance the new trans. Is there a small reasonably priced pump that would flow enough fluid to clean it out? Maybe like one of those little water pumps you chuck up in a drill.

I am just looking for a way to move enough fluid to do any good. I don't think a smaller type pump will do enough flushing.

A company named lubeguard makes a pressurized flush can that contains a solvent to flush lines and cooler. That should help.:D

Pretty sure it would've had to made it past both filters to get into the cooler.
Wrong my friend. Cooler and lines need to have a flushing machine installed with solvent or hot atf ( preferred ) The plate trans cooler is designed to expand under heat when the fluid gets hot. The plates contract when they cool off and trap debris. Flushing a cooler cold may not get all the trash out, but hot atf sure will.
This is why you see valves stick after a road test.

These flush cans do not have enough pressure to flush 5/8 lines very well. ask me how I know.:D In my shop we pull the cooler off and run solvent through them and blow 175 psi air pressure both ways to clean them.
One thing I have learned the hard way ( expensive ) years ago. Just because your cooler flow great cold does not mean it won't plug 20 miles down the road and destroy a gear train. When in doubt, replace cooler.

Take your cooler off, take it to a local trans shop, and have them flush it the way Mike said!! Or just buy Mike's cooler, and only worry about flushing the lines (very easy).
