Do any of you guys by pass the radiator when installing a transmission cooler? I know on the gas trucks they do but I haven't seen much talk about doing it on the diesels.

Bad idea no matter if it's gas or diesel. There is no airflow below 35 mph and the oil to air cooler cannot knock down the initial heat therefore the trans will never run as cool as it can.
Ford tried this on their trucks in '99 and ate a lot of transmissions. In 2K they went right back with a radiator heat exchanger. Problem solved.

thanks

I seen a plugged one on a lbz. Made the trans temp go up past 210. After it was replaced it went back to it's normal 180-190 temp

I have deleted my radiator trans cooler. I am running straight through the trans cooler alone. However, I built a custom bumper with an air scoop strictly for the trans cooler.

To date I have yet to see the temps above 170. Thats driving to Tucson and back @ 105°, I'm sure the road temp was much higher than that.

I blame the horribly designed stock bumper for the poor air flow over the cooler. I'm sure I see plenty of air flow at even 5 mph.

I have yet to tow anything with the stand alone cooler. But thats what the LML is for.

Someone told me that under stop and go traffic conditions it is normal for a built trans to run AROUND 100 deg above ambient temp. Is this true or even close? Mine runs a little lower than that rule most of the time. Of course after 5th/lockup it runs much cooler

I like 175 F for normal. The Alli will work with 230 F all day long if you use TranSynd to protect the rubber internals and assure yourself of good lubrication.

Nothing wrong with the Duramax bumper. if you don't have airflow you don't get cooling.
D-MAX MAFIA, if your system works, good for you. It just goes against everything I ever tested or learned. I disagree with your findings.

Well Mike, your more than welcome to come take a ride with me and see for yourself.

Why would I lie about it? More so, why would I try to hurt my trans by running it hot? I'm not made of money like you and $4k is alot of money to me.

while on this ,, Mike do you think a cooler with an electric fan like the Derale Hyper Cool Extreme would be adequate at keeping things cool??

If the Derale cooler is a 0 pressure drop cooler or close to it, and the plates and inlets are properly sized it will work great as long as the fan is running full time. With the fan off the cooler will block air to the stack.
If you use one of these; make sure you use the fan as a pullern as they work much better than as a pusher.

they use a 12an fitting but I've not checked drop on them. the one we've done on a race truck still used the factory cooler as well and we put the fan on a switch. It'd be much easier to bypass the factory cooler is my thinking but i was gonna put this next one on a thermostat and run it as needed. Think if i just set the thermostat to come on at a low temperature we'd be ok? Regardless I'll probably try it but keep my factory lines handy in case it doesn't go as planned lol.

Intended use also factors in here. The OP is from Delaware. I'm sure it gets cold in DE. Coolant can actually help to WARM the fluid in cold temps which can be desireable.

I'll leave mine in the tank as liquid transfer cooling has a much greater capacity.

Good idea making the fans come on at a low temp. Electric fans have a hard time playing catch up.

the fan is something like 800cfm and brings tranny temps down 20* quick even when sitting still after a pass. the thermostat is pretty adjustable so i think with some tweaking it'll work out nicely once i decide when to bring the fan on.

So does a built tranny tend to run hotter than a stock one? ive got a stage 4 by mike and ive gotten it pretty toasty going over the mountains here on i70 in colorado this week pulling a heavy load.
