Do any of you guys by pass the radiator when installing a transmission cooler? I know on the gas trucks they do but I haven't seen much talk about doing it on the diesels.

Bad idea no matter if it's gas or diesel. There is no airflow below 35 mph and the oil to air cooler cannot knock down the initial heat therefore the trans will never run as cool as it can.
Ford tried this on their trucks in '99 and ate a lot of transmissions. In 2K they went right back with a radiator heat exchanger. Problem solved.
hey mike, whats the normal running trans temp and the maximum temp. will be fitting a gauge to monitor mine.
thanks

while on this ,, Mike do you think a cooler with an electric fan like the Derale Hyper Cool Extreme would be adequate at keeping things cool??
Well Mike, your more than welcome to come take a ride with me and see for yourself.
Why would I lie about it? More so, why would I try to hurt my trans by running it hot? I'm not made of money like you and $4k is alot of money to me.
If the Derale cooler is a 0 pressure drop cooler or close to it, and the plates and inlets are properly sized it will work great as long as the fan is running full time. With the fan off the cooler will block air to the stack.
If you use one of these; make sure you use the fan as a pullern as they work much better than as a pusher.
Intended use also factors in here. The OP is from Delaware. I'm sure it gets cold in DE. Coolant can actually help to WARM the fluid in cold temps which can be desireable.
they use a 12an fitting but I've not checked drop on them. the one we've done on a race truck still used the factory cooler as well and we put the fan on a switch. It'd be much easier to bypass the factory cooler is my thinking but i was gonna put this next one on a thermostat and run it as needed. Think if i just set the thermostat to come on at a low temperature we'd be ok? Regardless I'll probably try it but keep my factory lines handy in case it doesn't go as planned lol.
I like 175 F for normal. The Alli will work with 230 F all day long if you use TranSynd to protect the rubber internals and assure yourself of good lubrication.
Nothing wrong with the Duramax bumper. if you don't have airflow you don't get cooling.
D-MAX MAFIA, if your system works, good for you. It just goes against everything I ever tested or learned. I disagree with your findings.
