I've had a broken bell housing and a scrap allison main case sitting here for a few months with the intent of scrapping it for the aluminum. So i call my local metal recycler this afternoon and they tell me aluminum is going for 45 cents a pound...I have about 48lbs of aluminum here so I say cool, that'll buy the wife and me an ok dinner..

I take the case and bell housing in and he writes me up a ticket and when I take it up front to get paid the lady says 12 cents per pound is what they pay...

She says it's the worst cheapest aluminum they have ever seen so they will only pay me 1/4 of normal value.

Does this sound about right or is she out of her mind?

It's cast aluminum but it shouldn't matter. I don't believe the scrap yards up here have ever said a word about cast alum... Was it clean, free of any steel or no aluminum items?

I would tell em to pound sand, I'll throw it in the dump before I let you rip me off:thumb:

Totally bare cases, every nut, bolt and steel piece removed.

Usually cast aluminum pays "breakage" which is much less than good aluminum...

Well that would make sense with what they wanted to pay me.

I have about 4 scrap companies within about 2 miles of me, before they even touch it I ask for a price. If I don't like the price I close the tailgate and leave, well almost, on several occasions the price bumped 5 cents per pound...

Guys I go to pay the same price for crushed aluminum cans as they do dirty cast egr parts I throw in there. No bickering or bantering at all. I love it.
