Allison 5sp: tourqe converter starts ticking then goes away

ok so down in AZ while at the races Saturday i noticed my converter started ticking something awful then i would put in gear it went away? its been doing it off an on ever since, but when im on the throttle it doesnt do it just at idle or sometimes now at idle in gear? i pulled the starter to check the bolts all were tight? any ideas on whats possibly wrong

I thought it would get louder with rpms if the flexplate was cracked? also its intermintent thats what gets me one day it wont do it at all next day its doing all the time at idle??? just a real screwy thing if it was constant i would think the flexplate but its not. Also i noticed the frequecny of the ticking gets worse if i rod the hell out of it? not sure why it matters but it does maybe ill try recording the noise when it does it again

wouldnt matter. the cracked part may be stuck stuck one day, then open up the next. if you put it in gear, it may be puttin enough torque on it to push teh crack part onto the TC to stop the clicking.

My money is on the flexplate too. might try gettin under the truck when its clickin in park, put the end of a decently long screwdriver on the tranny bell housing and put your ear on the other end of the screwdriver (preferably the blunt end :D), it will work like a poor mans stethascope. so you should hear a decent "click" through it ASSuming the sound is transfering through the bellhousing as well

FML! i have crawled under when its ticking it sounds like the converter is what was making it but ill try that out an see im going to hual this thing to the scrap yard at the rate shit keeps breaking:mad:

maybe mike l will know were im coming from on this anyone here ever heard that ticking noise some bone stock 6 speed allisons make? its really simialr to that i have herd a few stock trucks or tuned trucks converters make the sound not sure if mike has herd that or not but just some food for thought ill check out the noise when it starts again

Im for cracked flexplate as well. Remember when i told you that turning the defuel off was a bad idea? ;)

Which converter are you running. Sometimes you will hear the clutches rattling in neutral.

Thats what I was going to suggest but I'm by far no one in the know only to say I had a noisy converter years ago but it was a rattle more so than a ticking. But sounds can be different to different ears,if you know what I mean.

to be honest i couldnt give you exact specs i have roughly 60-65k miles on it its from ITW(Idaho Transmisson wharehouse) local place here, its suppoused to be the same as a 1057 converter but who knows for sure maybe its simply worn out form the miles or just built wrong, bad, i dunno. Its a triple disk i do know that for sure. and like mackin said maybe it is more of a rattle then a ticking to some...

mike_s i have had it on for awhile dude :thumb:(it was your idea in the first place to try it lol) it was off at the main races sat but not for test an tune which it made the nosie the morning after test an tune before defuel was turned off my shifts were killing me in the 1/4 before that. its back on now

A guy just listed 1 for an lly is that the same? Also i bought a grand prix from a guy that said the motor was knocking but only at idle,i pulled the motor and sure nuf the fly wheel was cracked i replaced it and the wife is still driving it :D
