I've read a little about that the block should have a torque plate mounted when being line bored, I don't really understand the process, could someone enlighten me? Thanks

Torque plate honing is a process where they use about a 3+" thick piece of steel and head bolts to mimic the stress of head studs on a cylinder. It had been proven that arp stud will deform the cylinder shape when fully torqued. This process lets the cylinders be honed out while in this deformed shape so that when the engine is fully assembled there will be no clearance issues caused by the headstuds

Does it have to be steel? I notice some of them for sale on the net for other motors are aluminum. If it's just to simlulate the bulging from the studs in the cylinders, it seems aluminum would work too. It's not like the plate is going to provide the exact same deformation as the heads anyway.

I was thinking about making my own torque plate if a local shop doesn't have one. It's basically a plate with clearance for studs, maybe .050 over on the cyl diameter, then have it double disk ground....(?)

Or am I off base?

Aluminum should be fine, SoCal Diesels sells them and I believe they are aluminum
