We have 2 2007 C4500s that had failed Harmonic Balancers, one for which this thread is started for had a broken crank as a result. The other has dropped a cylinder and has yet to be torn down. (is this a common problem at 98k and 114k miles?)

We acquired a LB7 Longblock and installed and can not get the thing to start. Spoke with a few local mechanic shops that deal with the Duramax engines and they say the priming is a pain... a week later still nothing. Codes are showing for the crank, cam, coolant, air temp, air flow, and 1 other sensor. The mechanic working the job is fed up so I did some research. I pulled the paperwork on the engine purchase, we were sent per the VIN# an LB7 LongBlock. Called the dealer and according to them it's an LMM that belongs in the truck. I have read across the internet that the Short blocks are the same throughout LB7, LMM, LBZ, LML I think, but the LongBlocks may not be. Can someone please chime in and set me straight.

Got off the phone with the place we got the engine from and he said we had left the timing plate that goes on the cam gear on the old engine... sending someone to get it now, hopefully that's the only issue... But the fact that I see the long block is different from what this truck requires has me concerned also.

I'm sure someone with more knowledge of the swap is going to jump in, but i know the reluctor wheel has a different number of teeth between an lb7 and an lmm (i cant remember which one has the extra tooth right now) so if you didnt address that im sure that would be a major problem

Edit found spec on reluctor wheel- 01-05 uses a 56 tooth whereas 06+ uses a 57 tooth

To my limited knowledge the blocks are the same with perhaps some different metallurgy in them. Relucter wheel is my bet.

were these truck all stock? A balancer failure at those miles seems odd let alone 2 of them...

reluctor wheel has 1 less tooth on lb7/lly engines so id say that's the issue and also the cam and crank angle sensors don't mix well between models either fit the lmm reluctor wheel and sensors or we have welded an extra tooth on the lb7/lly ones before if an lbz/lmm one hasn't been available :thumb:
