Trying to decide on new summer shoes.

stock 2007 classic, going to do cognito uppers, t bar crank, valance trim.

285/65/18

vs

305/55/20 - these are 33.2" is this too large without a proper lift?

the 305 on 20s are 74 lbs a tire (just the rubber), the 285 on 16s are like 54 lbs a tire (just the rubber). Plus I don't know the weight difference in rims 18 vs 20. But 80lbs at least heavier in rolling weight, how much would this effect things?

With the right back spacing you should be fine but depends on how much you crank the bars up, I wouldn't go too far, I went from 285/75/16 BFGs to a 305/45/22 street tire and there was def a weight difference but really not sure how much mpg difference, I'd say 1-2 mpg. Mine are nearly a 33 inch tire and only place mine rubs is the drivers side where the parking brake cable pushes the plastic out a little bit. That's when turning on lock though.:thumb:

I can vouch for the weight and tread pattern being a big factor in mileage. I purchased new 18" wheels and put 285/65/18 Nitto Trail Grapplers on them. Mileage went way down, over 2mpg highway, from the 285/70/17 Nitto Terra Grappler I had been running. I ran those Trails for about a year and got tired of the in-cab noise and horrible mileage. Ended up replacing them with a 275/65/18 Cooper AT3 and guess what, mileage came right back to what it had been, got my 2mpg back.

Obviously the tread pattern isn't nearly aggressive and the Coopers were 20bs lighter per tire. Best decision I've made yet...

Was looking at

Michelin LTX AT2
Cooper Discoverer AT3
Toyo Open Country AT2

Michelin are out if I go past 285/65/18, good to know the Coopers recovd your lost mpg :)

I have cooper zeons and I'm not impressed with the wear so far, maybe the AT3s are better? Good things from Toyo, I would go with which one has a higher mileage rating. I run 285/60/18 and can still pull 20mpg. I wouldn't go 20s if you're concerned about mpg

I heard good things about the Toyo Open Country AT2. They look pretty aggressive for an A/T and have a 65k tread wear warranty

I have 285/75/16 Nitto terra grapplers and love them so far. I consistently get 19mpg hand calc, supposed to have great tread life, and they're pretty quiet. Just a little bit of a whine above 80mph and in corners. We put Toyo open country's on my mom's 4runner, 265/75/17 I believe, and she has been happy. She's very picky when it comes to road noise and vibration. They've got close to 40k miles and are still over half tread.
