hey mike- how important is it to have the WOT kickdown solenoid hooked up on a TH400? Does it firm up WOT shifts or do anything to pressure in the trans? Or does it only serve as a kickdown actuator?

I was wondering because at WOT, the TH400 in my beetle doesnt really shift that firm (kinda on the verge of flaring the shifts too, you can hear it in the video), and im wondering if its because I dont have the kickdown wired up on it...???

The kick down solenoid has nothing to do with pressure. It is a downshift solenoid only. Look at your modulator to begin with. This is where you will get your pressure. Vacum regulates the modulator. Ideal vacum on a gasser without a cam will be about 17 or 18 inches. When the throttle is floored you should see 0-5 inches and the vacum should e rising graually from there. Remove your modulator and find a kitchen scale. Stick a bolt into the snout and put the modulator upside down on the scale and push down on the modulator while watching the bolt. When the bolt compresses in the modulator observe the poundage of the break. It should be no more than 14 lb. The small modulators are adjustable by way of a screw inside the end where the vacum line plugs in. Clockwise is more pressure as it tightens the diaphram and counter clockwise does the opposite. Call me and I'll walk you through this.:D
