Buddy swapped trannies in his suburban work truck, put in a turbo 350. When he puts it in gear it feels like it's shifting and linkage is working, put it doesn't engage in gear. When he puts it in park, it grinds. Only thing he doesn't have hooked up is a vacuum line could that be it? or any ideas?

well when the vacum line was unhooked on my th350 it just wound out in every gear before it would shift no matter the throttle position so i dont think it is that

Sounds like your buddy misdiagnosed a bad tranfercase for a bad trans. Grinding in park in a 4X4 is ALWAYS transfercase.

Mainshafts don't stop too well when they are just free wheeling. I know though alot of people have simply forgot to re-engage the transfer case back into gear after they had them out.
