I have two Allison 1000 transmissions, one with a broken tail housing. Can I swap the tail housings complete from one to the other? What would I want to consider if I do this? I will be doing this with the transmissions removed.

Yes you can. As long as both have the same planetary setup. I assume they are both the same type? Meaning both 5 speeds, or both 6 speeds etc?
If so, the only thing to check after your done is input shaft endplay. The endplay is determined and adjusted with a shim washer under the rear most ball bearing that sits in the extension housing.
