This has been discussed for years with BS answers. Which is better for speed, mileage. Has anyone tested long enough to conclude a viable answer?
I want members info, not hearsay please.

Mythbusters did some pretty extensive testing and found the tailgate up created a pocket of air in the bed and thus air going over the cab rolls off versus going over the cab and swirling back to the back of the back glass of the cab.

Tailgate up. I drive 40 miles one way for work and tried 3 different methods, tailgate up, down, and off. Tailgate down I lost .5 to 1 mpg, off about .5.

I did this to double check mythbusters's testings and they're right on this one. Didn't believe it at first until I tried it

Could this be James at work?

Proper attire is key to workplace safety. Would be a shame to get rug burn on your knees. This guy is well prepared for a long day of service. Something tells me this fine gentleman spends a lot of time with his tailgate wide open.
