Can you swap compressor wheels and backing plates between chargers without messing up the turbo's balance? Like going from a 71mm wheel to an 80mm wheel?

i would almost garentee that a rebalance is required anytime a wheel swap is done , that seems to be the biggest thing they are balancing is the wheels .

BW turbo's typically don't have removable backing plates, Garrett and Turbonetics do. I wouldn't do the swap without a rebalance. I've seen a lot of turbo's from BW and Garrett that are suppose to be balanced from the factory be off quite a bit in balance.

There is a reason to be concerned that balance could be off, and for racing purposes, it's best to check balance as a pair.

However, replacing wheels and covers is VERY common, and some do it at the race track. In my case, I've swapped compressor wheels with no ill effect. I would not do that with a customer turbo though.
