stupid retracting mirrors

I dont know if this is categorized right but my side mirrors will not retract. I've messed with the switch in the door but have not messed with the actual mirror itself. I don't want to get into a pandora's box of stupid and not have mirrors at all. I was wondering if there is a quick fix or am I better off replacing them to a fixed mirror.

Can you hear the motors in the mirrors trying to work or is everything dead?

when I push the button to retract both mirrors "whine" and turn the mirror down. I double checked all the wire placements and they are correct.

Could be the mechanisms are dried out/dirt encrusted and need cleaning and lube. Here is a write up outlining the procedure:
