German Jumo 205 engine was a supercharged two-stroke diesel with opposing pistons. It was about 1000ci and 860hp, which was not bad back in the 1930's. It was used for aircraft.
No head gaskets, no valves, two crankshafts, 4 injectors per cyl that were driven by a cam. The exhaust port was on the top of the cylinder, and the intake port was on the bottom. By staggering the cranks 11 deg to reduce the time both ports are open, they created a very efficient two-stroke.
