I just returned from a cross country trip that saw 7800 miles in less then 10 days. The truck ran great but the MPGs were not what I had hoped for with diesel fuel costing so much and the fact that the truck was towing about 3500 pounds going west and about 5000 pounds going east. The truck was pushing a decent headwind going west but the truck was the tallest part of the load. I never got better then 10.8 mpg. Going east the truck had the tailwind which helped pull the bigger load but still only got about 12.5 mpg. Cruise was set at 72 for both directions and there was no loss of power, just MPGs. I see people getting this milege towing 3x the load I am. In fact, the 4.8 5 speed 2wd got about the same milege hauling more earlier this year. I just expected more from a Reg cab long bed 2wd diesel.... I dont need more power as MPGs are way more important to me. Any ideas?

That is all your going to get at that speed. Slow down to 65 and you would have seen 3 more mpg. I have made 4 trips to Vegas and back from WV. I have seen 21 empty. Towed 2 of those trips, about 5,000 lbs and got 13 out, 17 back, but at 65 mph average.

You can get a good tune that will help allot even at that speed. My truck will get 16 Mpg towing 4k at 70 mph and 21.5 unloaded at 75.
