A turbo doesn't know what it's mounted on. As long as it's sized right for the application it'll work....excluding the newer VGT stuff. That would probably suck to get figured out.
Hell....quite a few of the turbos we use on these diesels are of of gen-sets, 18 wheelers, etc.

True....I just don't know jack as far as how it would produce boost. Obviously have to be some sort of remote mount in the exhaust system instead of intake. You could push ~ 30 lbs. with a diesel but don't want to push over 7-8 with a gas. How would you know? (Thinking about a 5.3 or 6.0 gasser).

You can make it work. Mustang guys like using 7.3 powerstroke turbos. I know a Buick guy that used a 6.0PSD turbo. Keep the compression low and run a good CAC and you can run in the low 20 lbs range on pump gas.
