Fired the truck up today after work. Once I hit the street I noticed the truck sounded different. Pulled off at a gas station down the road & popped the hood to look for anything obvious.

Switched DSP positions to a setting that normally has a hiss at idle. Still rumbled. Hopped on the freeway & little to no boost up the on ramp. Watched vein position on my CTS while on the freeway and it bounced from 65% to 100% constantly. Got off freeway a few miles later and when I came to a stop the engine sounded normal. Built boost like it's suppose to.

Am I in the market for a turbo rebuild? Rail pressure seemed normal (did just install a plug in the rail a few days ago). Tried cycling the engine on & off when it was acting up with now change. Once it snapped out of it, truck drove fine all the way home

The ring is known to stick. Need to take it apart and clean it.

Before you go pulling the turbo I would rule out just a bad vein position sensor. I've done a lot more of those than I have cleaned or replaced turbos. With it being random and intermittent like that my money is on a sensor.

Luke, if you want to try the vane position sensor you can swing by the house and we can swap the one out of my lly to see if that's it. New owner is picking it up this friday

Thanks dude, appreciate the offer. We'll see if it acts up again, if so I'll call you. Sell the truck to a local guy?

you can also take the round plug out on the drivers side of the turbo and use a V band clamp "T" Bolt and thread it into the plug to remove it then thread it into the piston inside and see if it moves freely in and out. doing this will let you feel if the unison ring is sticking somewhere or if it is moving freely. I had one I could not even pop loose with a small pry bar against the T bolt. it was froze up bad.
