At the bottom of the steering column. Just above the ISS joint you unbolted to get the ISS out. It will either be green or white. It pushes inside the column.

My 02 has been doing something similar and has been doing it since I got it in 02. Had the dealer look at it while it was still under warranty and I believe they replaced the steering shaft. However, I am not sure about the plastic bearing. Usually when I hit a bump it feels like something is loose in the steering but drives and steers fine. Is this similar to what you experienced?

Also, how much was the new bearing?

The clunking fix is not the long term fix, it fixes the problem temporarily. The noise could come back 5k or 30k it depends. GM has not found the appropriate fix yet. This is from my dealer, I asked them the same thing.

Its a screwy design but as long as it doesn't compromise my safety then I leave it alone.

Good info. I know a guy with an 03 that has the same issue. This is likely his problem as well.
