Well my starter went out the other day. Or that's what I think it is. Because it would only click. Like the abendix is stuck. I tapped on it and it worked but now it will only click. My question is where's the best place and or cheapest place to get a new one.

I wouldn't go with the cheapest one. I had a lot of issues with advance auto starters for the duramax. Went through 3 of them before we got a decent one. The only reason he bought one there was it was cheaper than carquest or the local dealership and we stuck with the cheap advance ones because they kept giving us new ones and i can change them in 45 min or less. It seemed like the solenoids were weak on them and wouldn't completely engage. The solenoids even had issues when bench tested at the store. The advance starters were all remans too, they don't carry new ones. So if you like changing them every month and want to risk chewing up your ring gear then buy a cheap one. If not just spend the money and get it over with. If mine ever goes out ill pay the extra money and buy a new one instead of a cheap reman.

Have the prices come down at the dealer? Last I knew they were like $500 bucks. I bought one years ago on Ebay for less than $200 and it's still sitting on the shelf.

To the original thread starter, chances are just the solenoid went bad and they are like $75 dollars at the dealer if memory serves me. I had to buy one when the stud for the electrical connections broke doing a transmission install.

thats the best way to do it. normally thats the first thing to go on these starters today it seems. anyone know if the starts (not solenoids) in our trucks are rebuildable? like, is there a rebuild kit for them. jsutjust wanna know for future reference :D

If it is clicking, I would guess the solenoid is engaging, but for some reason or another the starter motor isn't spinning the motor.

As far as rebuild kits, I don't know of any available, but there is a starter/alternator place local to me that rebuilds them so I know they are rebuildable.

Anyone have the part number for this item Mackin is talking about? I talked to a dealer and they claim it is not sold seperatly. I need one for the same reason Mackin needs one.

I don't think it's the solenoid bc it is engaged and will not disengage. It's like the batteries are dead. If u can understand that.

well they will still click like they are working but the problem is the contact that it needs to hit to make the starter turn on get worn down or corroded so it will click making the bendix come out but the solenoid wont go far enough forward to make contact power for the start to turn. hope thats not too confusing

That's true. I guess it could go either way. Definitely cheaper to try the solenoid first.
