Any one have Starter Issues?

Mine has skipped a few times recently, Its getting replaced Next week.

The Tech said he's seen a few bad ones due to the TQ required to crank the engine.

Just wandered if its rare.

IIRC, RIPemOFF666 had some lose starter bolts that caused an issue.

My dads 7.3 had the bolts back out and had to end up replacin the fly wheel on the motor cause it wore the teeth out. His truck only has two bolts to hold the starter on. Thats a ford for ya.

"Skipped"? as in dead spot and just clicks? or grinds when engages? If the the later of the two, you may want to give ring gear a once over.

Kinda grinds, Like the starter gear spins but doesnt turn the flywheel. Very intermittent.

I've had mine do that a few times over life of the truck. Like the bendix doesn't kick in before it starts spinning, but not with enough consistency that I would bother changing it. I wouldn't spend the money to replace it unless it does it a lot. The starter isn't cheap, and if you have to pay someone for labor on top of that, I wouldn't want the bill.

Where would someone get one for that cheap, Henry? I got mine from CarQuest, and to the best of my knowledge, I paid around $200.

The starter on our pulling truck "stuck" on and just about burned down the truck a couple of weeks ago. Lots of smoke and some melted wires, but no fire. Had to disconnect batterys to get it to stop trying to turn over. Scary as hell. We put quick disconnects on both batterys in case something like this ever happens again. New starter was around $130 I think.

Wow! That 's awful.

Glad it didnt do any major damage.

What is it with these starters? They dont seem to be " HD" Like the truck they are in .
