Looks like I will be working around Pleasanton area. Any idea on where to live? Wife is a schoolteacher and have a 7 month old son. I know San Antonio is close and Austin isn't much further but would Katy or somewhere outside Houston be worth the drive?

It seems pretty reasonable, my buddy bought a new 4 bedroom house last year for 175k. It's nothing amazing, but it's new and it's in a nice neighborhood in Roundrock.

Are you going to have a daily commute to Pleasanton? If so Houston and Austin area are probably going to be to far of a drive. It's a bit over 2hrs from Houston and almost the same from Austin, especialy if you moved to Round Rock. I personally don't like Austin much and cost of living is a lot higher there than Houston or San Antonio.

Pleasanton is a nice little town. If you want to be closer to SA, look around La Vernia.

There is no way that I would consider a commute from Austin or the west side of Houston. That is a looooong way.

No I will be working a 14 on 14 off schedule so I will only be making the drive once in a while. I will check out La Vernia for sure. I would like somewhere housing is affordable with a good school district and a little but of land. Not talking a huge acreage but maybe 5 acres or less with room for a shop

That's kinda what I figured. 5 acres in Austin will be pricey unless you look out in Hutto or something but I have a friend with kids there and he's not to impressed with the schools. I grew up in Katy which has good schools (at that time anyway) but finding 5 acers will probably be a bit difficult unless you look out towards brookshire/sealy. I personally love Houston so that's where I would suggest moving, but visit all 3 City's and decide for yourself.

I've spent a bunch of time around Brookshire (Brother had 3 acres outside of town 20 years before moving to SA) and Sealy. Nephew lives on 5 acres near there and I always preferred Sealy but either way you need to prepare to live in an area flat as a pancake. But either has nice people all around but IDK about the schools.

Thanks a ton for the input. I do appreciate it. I will definitely check those towns out. I will be moving to a rental first and once we get situated using my VA loan to buy a house so I have time but would like to be near the general area I'm buying first. I would assume Corpus Christi or anything on the water would be awful expensive too but do like the ocean

My house is in San Antonio and my room mate drives to P town for work everyday. Takes him 45 minutes.

Houses in my neighborhood go for around $89,000-$95,000 to buy or renting seems to be around $1100. Mostly 3 bedroom 2 bathroom houses, nice backyards

No way in hell you want to move to Austin. That place blows

If you wanna live a little south of town you can find nice double wides on a few acres for a good price. Lots of places to move to that are "in the oil patch"

Wow sounds like a way better deal to buy. Once I get an exact rig location I can really narrow down my search as well
