Or have there been others? The MB I got has 6 PCIe slots in it. But with the video cards taking up 2 spaces (when I add more) I wasn't going to be able to use the full potential. So I bought some PCIe extender cables and made a rack to hold them.

Here is the bare rack.

Here it is with a couple of mounting feet added and the PCIe extenders.

And here it is with the only card I currently have just to give you idea.

I can fit 2 video cards on the MB so I only needed 4 extenders. Currently running the machine with it in place. I still need to make a case to hold it all and get it off the floor. And I really need the new 580 card to drive down the price of the 450s. :lildevil:

I have no idea what you're doing with that rack as I didnt understand the acronyms, but it looks nice. :)

Some people mod trucks...others mod computers.

With a MIG. . . quite possibly. . . because this one is screwed together.

This was an inspiration for me when I started looking into building a rig. He never got it to recognize the other 4 clients. Apparently, Windows will only recognize up to 8.

Read that thread, I've seen another one similar. The problem they are running into is a video driver and MoBo limitation. You can only have up to 8 GPUs (Graphical Processor Units) in a computer. The cards they are using have 2 GPUs. So once they turn on card #4 they are at 8 GPUs. The 295 card that most of them are using do 14~15k PPD (Points Per Day) with both GPUs running (total per card). The GTX 450 I'm using (single GPU) has been doing a consistent 15.6k in my system. Its possible that might drop once I add more cards. But if it doesn't and I figure @ 15.5k for 6 cards I'm at 93k PPD added to the SMP client that is doing 3.8k PPD and I'll be getting around 96k PPD from the system. Even if it drops to 90k I'll be happy.

The GTS 450s I'm using (going to keep them all the exact same) is factory overclocked. I may play with OCing the CPU later on but I'm going to wait for now. Unless the price of the 450s drops anytime soon I'll probably wait for the first of the year to buy the next couple of cards, unless I get stupid and that could happen very easily.

Right now I have a factory OC'd one. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130577 Not sure if I'm going to stay with the 450 now. The recent 6800 WUs that they are sending are kicking its butt. Might have to move up to the 480 to keep up. I don't plan on another purchase until probably January anyway so I'll see how the WUs go and the price of all of the cards go until then.

I just wanted to get the rack built so I would be ready for which card I use.

Yes, the new WU's are really too big for anything less than a 470.

In theory, the newer ATI cards would kick Fermi butt, but FAH doesn't support them very well right now.

But something to keep in mind, the 450 is fairly power-stingy, and doesn't generate the heat that the big cards do. I'd rather have two 450's than one 580.
