So I pulled some bearings out of a Cat 3516HD engine at work today. I noticed something that I had previously hadn't thought much of until now. The Fillets are shot Peened... When I google the process I learned something interesting, a couple publications stated a 10-40% increase in "Fatigue" strength depending on crank material... Maybe something to help prevent breaking cranks?

Does anyone know of trying this on a D-max Crank or where to get it done?

Here is a pic of the Cat engine

its also used for stress relief, you'll find that when you pull the valve covers on C series Cat engines the decks under the valve covers are peened.

Some diesel shops do it allready, I know NGM does it and almost all gasser builders. Shot peening eliminates stress risers, where a crack can start to form. Polishing does the same thing, only provides a finer finish. This is nothing new, but seems that most diesel shops are way behind.
